Fairfax defeats Westchester 54-49

Fairfax High School went head-to-head with one of its biggest rivals, Westchester, on January 26, in a very close 54-49 victory for the Lions.

The two teams were level for nearly the entire game, save the last 2:30 of the second quarter.  At the end of the first, Westchester had a slight 17-16 advantage.

Throughout most of the second quarter, the scoring slowed for both teams, and with just under three minutes remaining, the Comets still led 24-22.  Then Fairfax took control, running away on a 13-0 streak to close out the half.

A defensive third quarter did not see too much scoring, sending the Lions to the final quarter with a 42-32 lead.  In the fourth, Westchester began working its way back, winning the quarter 17-12.  Despite a valiant effort, Fairfax’s lead was too strong to overcome and the Lions walked away with the five-point victory.

The Lions spread the scoring out with Donald Gipson, Lindsey Drew, and Isaiah Ajiboye each scoring 13 points.  Lorne Currie followed up with 11 points.

With this win, Fairfax remains undefeated at 20-0.  The Lions currently sit at 15th in the DigitalSports National Basketball Rankings and 3rd in California.

Fairfax has a busy week ahead of it with games against Palisades (Jan. 28) and Hamilton (Jan. 30), followed by a face off against 13th ranked in the nation and second in the Golden State, Sierra Canyon, January 31.
